Osteoarthritis inflammation and Treatment

Osteoarthritis treatment can be done with or without medications. However, sufferers of osteoarthritis, which is the most common among the over 100 different types of arthritis conditions and afflicting 20 million elder people in the United States alone, prefer for osteoarthritis treatment without medications. The reason is obvious. Both modes of treatment can help relieve the joint pain and other osteoarthritis symptoms, but the disease may still continue to progress.

Osteoarthritis is often confused with Rheumatoid arthritis, but the two disorders have different causes and progressions. Osteoarthritis may affect only a single joint and can be triggered by localized wear and tear resulting in painful inflammation. According to the NIAMS it is estimated that nearly 1 out of 8 Americans age 25 and older suffer from osteoarthritis, but osteoarthritis treatment is most common among adults over 65 years old.

Exercise is also beneficial to patients who show symptoms of osteoarthritis, however extreme care must be taken not to cause further injury to the knee. High impact exercise is not desirable because it can cause more pain. Exercise does not actually make the condition worse and can in fact relieve some of the swelling in the joints. Swimming is considered to be the best exercise for osteoarthritis.

There is little evidence that complimentary therapies help relieve the actual issues of osteoarthritis. More often than not, the therapies simply relax you, and put you in a more positive frame of mind, which gives you the will power and ability to better manage your pain. The exception to this is acupuncture, for which there is evidence to suggest it is an effective osteoarthritis treatment.

Prescription medication for osteoarthritis includes Prescription Nonsteroidal Anti-Inflammatory Drugs (known as NSAIDs) and Corticosteroids. NSAIDs work by reducing inflammation and swelling of the joints, and also provide some pain relief. If you have a history of heart disease you will need to inform your doctor before taking NSAIDs as there is a risk of cardiovascular problems. Some medications are available in cream form and are applied directly to the skin.

Thankfully, there are effective medicines that can relieve you of the pain that comes with osteoarthritis. No matter what kind of arthritis you suffer from, there are drugs that can help you. However, there are also natural ways to relieve osteoarthritis pain. One effective method is to take Glucosamine and Chondroitin Sulfate supplements. These substances are capable of promoting growth of cartilage and decrease the level of osteoarthritis pain.

Another important area of treatment is weight control. Obesity increases the risk of osteoarthritis by impacting knee and hip joints. Obese women are susceptible to hip osteoarthritis due to housework, and posture and weight control has to be worked on from young age. The reason for this is that once fat accumulates it is difficult to reduce. Instead of waiting for disease to take root, it is advisable to seek medical treatment early.

Even though osteoarthritis treatment is always developed so people can have osteoarthritis-free life, it is always better if we take preventative actions so we do not have to face the problem in the future. The prevention of osteoarthritis can be simple; all we need to do is lead a healthy life. Since overweight is one of the major osteoarthritis causes, then controlling out weight can help us to prevent osteoarthritis.
