Approach to Maggot therapy for healing the wound

By Paul Bruce at 2011-02-15 04:43:02

Maggot therapy is a new way to help the wounds in the human body heal at a faster pace. It is very creepy to imagine having maggots crawl under your skin for healing the wound. However, maggots are also related to something that is rotting. People who do not know much about the new found therapy have less faith in it and also the role of maggots in healing a wound is largely misunderstood.

In some instances, the eating of rotten and dead tissue in living animals is actually a good thing. The United States Armed Special Forces Medics have learned to use of maggots as tools for field debridement. In controlled and sterile conditions, the act of using maggots in non-healing or soft tissue wounds has been used to great success. But some maggots such as the botfly larva are parasitic in nature which spend part of their lives under the skin of living animals.

Let's discuss this treatment. For many years, maggot therapy has been utilized. In ancient times they were utilized to clean wounds. Even before that time, the earth has utilized the maggot to remove dead, infected tissues. This is the basic technology utilized to help heal these wounds, as it ensures dead and infected tissues are removed without damage to healthy tissues. It was started as a technology in 1930s when maggots were produced commercially.

While the nasty sight of a blood-sucking leech on your body may make you want to hurl, this alternative therapy dates back at least 5,000 years ago in Egypt. Medicinal leeches, which are actually worms, have been traditionally used the world over to cure all sorts of ailments, from fevers to flatulence; headaches to hemorrhoids. In fact, there is even a word used to describe the use of the slimy critters in medicine: hirudotherapy.

Maggots are used extensively as baits for fishing and as food for meat eating pet animals. They are also used for therapeutic purposes to clean persistent wounds and encourage faster healing. This process referred to as maggot debridement therapy is performed under medical supervision using laboratory grown dead tissue eating maggots. Forensic scientists use maggots developing in dead decaying bodies to gauge the time of death.

People who are bedridden, in a coma or are largely paralyzed and can't move their body are the usual victims of this condition. Bed sores can be treatable if found early, but if they are not given medical attention right away, they can become very serious and even life-threatening. The sores start out as a reddish, painful area that then becomes purple.

Fleas have four main stages in their life cycle: egg, larva, pupa, and adult. The total flea life cycle can range from a couple weeks to several months, depending on environmental conditions. The total flea population is made up of approximately 50% eggs, 30% larvae, 15% pupae, and only 5% biting adults. This means that the majority of the fleas life is spent off the animal making the environment the most logical treatment target rather then the host animal.
