Osteoporosis Symptoms are Usually very Hard to Detect

By Paul Bruce at 2011-02-19 04:31:42

Osteoporosis is an increasingly widespread condition defined by the loss of bone density. In a word, bones become fragile and easily breakable. The bones become porous, resembling a sponge like compressibility and a brick like density. Normally, bones are comprised of a mix of protein, calcium, and collagen. They make bones strong; they are lacking in the bones of someone with osteoporosis.

There are many ways that you can combat Osteoporosis and most of them are with taking a proper diet. If you're a woman of menopausal age try taking the extra vitamins to replace those lost due to your time of life. If you talk this over with your Doctor I'm sure he will suggest the right type of supplements you need. With most people you're never too young to think about what causes Osteoporosis as it can affect young people as well as the old.

You see bone is constantly being renewed in a cycle where cells called osteoclasts seek through bone finding old parts and destroying them leaving an empty space, this space in turn is sought out by cells called osetoblasts which then refill the space with new healthy bone. Osteoporosis is caused by there being too many gaps for the osteoblasts to fill leaving a honeycomb of bone that is weak and fragile and prone to breakages.

How do our bones become so frail though? This is because bone is a living tissue that is constantly being regrown using two major cells in bone forming; osteoclasts and osteoblasts. Simply put osteoclasts are cells that move through the bone looking for old parts that need renewal and destroy that old bone leaving a gap. Osteoblasts are cells that move through the bone looking for those empty spaces and fill them with new bone. In this way the bone is renewed all the time.

The fractures located in the spine can cause severe back pain that radiates around from big back to the sides. Often times compression fractures off the back are easily related to osteoporosis symptoms and are often discovered during treatment for back pain. Those suffering from osteoporosis may also experience a loss of height or even a curvature of the spine which creates the hunched back appearance.

Women are nearly twice as likely as men to fracture bones due to osteoporosis. One reason is that women tend to have lower bone mass than men in general. Another reason is that women outlive men. Another factor is the sudden drop in estrogen at menopause that can accelerate bone loss. Women who are thin or have small frames are particularly at risk. Likewise, men who have low levels of testosterone also tend to be at greater risk.

Osteoporosis symptoms can appear without warning. Think about the back pain that just won't end. Many patients don't even know that they have osteoporosis until they experience a break and then have an exam and x-ray. Sometimes the osteoporosis isn't even diagnosed until after multiple fractures which puts you at risk for even higher morbidity.
