The Main Symptoms of Pink Eye

By Paul Bruce at 2011-02-23 04:42:57
Pink eye usually lasts about a week, and infects more people during the cold and flu season. Many people come in contact with the pink eye virus and don't notice the symptoms until 24 - 72 hours later! Even though it takes a while for the signs of conjunctivitis to show, it's wise to treat the cause and symptoms at the very first sign.

Another cause for chronic conjunctivitis is the environment. Air pollution, smoke and contact lens that are worn incorrectly can all be the causes of this eye issue. Under such circumstances, we can change the working environment by keeping it clean and stopping smoking. When the eyes feel dry, eye lube can be used to clean the conjunctivae sac.

As with other common eye inflammations, conjunctivitis usually looks and feels worse than it is. While the pronounced redness can be quite alarming, conjunctivitis very rarely causes long term visual damage. Pink eye is, however, a condition that often needs to be diagnosed and treated early as certain types of conjunctivitis are very contagious and any prolonged inflammation of the eyes should be treated with caution to prevent complications and tissue damage.

Treatment For Pink Eye - Conjunctivitis: Doctors don't usually prescribe medication for Pink Eye, because it usually goes away on it's own within a few days. You must take some precauctions though with family members since Pink Eye can very easily spread to others. Wash your hands often and and don't touch or rub your eyes. Don't share washcloths, towels or other linens with others, and wash items after each use.

Degongestant and anti-histamine medication such as naphazonline and chlorpheniramine can be easily purchased at your chemist. These medications will help you to reduce redness and itchiness in your pupil by preventing irritation in your eyes. There is little side effects with these medication, and is sometimes used to prevent allergies.

As with all viral infections, antibiotics are not the answer. Viral conjunctivitis just doesn't respond to treatment with antibiotic eye drops or ointment. As you would with a common cold, you can use an over-the-counter remedy to relieve some of the symptoms, but the virus just has to run its course. You may notice a worsening of symptoms in the first three to five days, but the condition should rapidly improve after that.

People who suffer from allergies may also suffer from a case of non-infectious pink eye. This usually means that their allergies cause much of the same symptoms like eye sensitivity, itchiness, swelling, and a red/pink color in the eye. If you suffer from allergies and experience symptoms like these, chances are that your allergies are causing this, and the pink eye will disappear when your allergies calm down.
