What is Sciatica and Its Symptoms

By Paul Bruce at 2011-02-25 01:56:57
Symptoms of sciatica are pretty simple as in most cases it starts with pain in the lower back region. The ailment starts mildly and then grows into an intense pain. This lowers down from the back through the buttock region and also carries down to the leg. Some sciatica patients also refer that their leg ache is worse than their back ache.

They run down each leg from the lower back, ending at the toes. This complex nerve joins the spinal column at the lower back and unfortunately it is quite easy to become pinched or compressed, especially as we grow older. This can lead to severe pain known as sciatica.

Over time sciatic pain gradually increases, as the pain worsens it becomes unbearable. Nerve pain is also manifested by patients experiencing sciatica. It is usually caused by inflammation on the sciatic nerve. Typically it is caused by the leaked fluid from the herniated disk which irritates the sciatic nerve causing it to get inflamed.

All that happens when you're suffering from sciatica is that you're experiencing some sort of nerve compression or irritation around the lower back and buttocks. This can happen for any number of reasons, the most common would be a spinal disc losing fluid. This means your spinal columns are compressed right on nerve roots.

Most patients who suffer from sciatica have a history of lower back pain. Initially the patient feels a mild pain in the buttocks, but it soon tends to become severe as it starts running down to the leg and foot. The true sciatica pain, actually, shoots or radiates down the knee and leg. In some cases the lower back pain even disappears completely.

Symptoms of sciatica may also be worse for people who are overweight, do not exercise regularly, wear high heels, or sleep on an un-supporting mattress. Exercising and stretching appropriately is extremely important for people who have sciatic nerve pain. They are a variety of different exercises you can do which will be dependent on exactly where your pain is felt. Inactivity can actually cause sciatic symptoms to be worse since it weakens the muscles.

Disc herniation can occur when a spinal segment becomes so degenerated the disc is protruded outward. This outward protrusion can sometimes push out posterior and lateral to the spinal cord. When this happens pressure is applied to the spinal nerve root which can cause pain to radiate along the sciatic nerve. The spinal nerve root can also have pressure put on it from other conditions such as spinal stenosis, piriformis syndrome and muscular trigger points.

In most cases, the sciatica pain will only occur on one side of the body. A sharp pain may be felt in just a portion of the hip or leg. The rest of the affected area may feel numb. In some instances, the feeling may be on the sole of your foot. It may also be in the back part of the calf. This leads people to believe that the problem is there rather than in the nerve itself. The leg which is affected may be weak also, making it difficult for the person to stand or move.
